Underground vs Mainstream
In the music world there are two sides of the coin if you will. Mainstream Hip Hop and Underground Hip Hop. The mainstream these days consists of people like Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka, Nicki Minaj etc. Pretty much anybody that you hear on the radio is what you would call "Mainstream". Underground Hip Hop usually consists of people who are more lyrical and heartfelt. People such as your Lupe or Charles Hamilton Blu etc. Mainstreamers tend to make songs that make you feel good, but lack depth or relatability. I mean really, how many of us can really say we have money to blow? *That was not a shot at Drake* IT'S A RECESSIONNNNNNNNNNNN!
I am not saying mainstream music is bad, but I personally need depth in the music that I listen to. That is why I love the All City Chess Club! They all bring some thought to the table you know? I don't want to just knod my head when listening to a song(in less I am in that mood), I need something to change my perspective on life you know! Guys like Lupe have changed the way I see things. I don't think I would have gotten that from say a Gucci Mane. When I feel depressed about this life I can just throw on "This Perfect Life" from Charles Hamilton, and I feel like he gets it, and that makes it a little better. Music, in my opinion, is supposed to help you get through situations or enhance the mood... I don't feel that deeper connection with everybody that I listen to. When lyrics have depth it feels like you are having a conversation with that person you know?
A prime example of this would be Lil Wayne. Rememeber the Carter II days? The days when he was big on mixtapes etc. Listen to his lyrics back then... He wasn't Nas, I'm not saying that but to me at least he was more heartfelt and real. He showed much more skill. Now that megastar mainstream buzz has caught up to him, his music has changed to suit his wider audience.
In conclusion, there is nothing wrong with the radio music of today, but at some point I KNOW more people will thirst after something deeper, and they will turn to the All City Chess Club for help.

This past Saturday in downtown Chicago was the 2nd annual Dwyane Wade's Chicago Has Talent Showcase. D-Wade brought out special hometown guest Lupe Fiasco to showcase their world-renowned talent amidst the 13 up and coming acts that the city's youth has to offer. Up top, Lupe performs his two most universally known songs "Kick, Push" and "Superstar" to conclude the show. It was a fitting ending that had the entire theatre standing and singing the Matthew Santos chorus, a capella.
